Evelyn Williamson Appointed as Chef de Mission for New Zealand Team at 2025 World University Games
University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand (UTSNZ) is pleased to announce the appointment of Evelyn Williamson as the Chef de Mission for the New Zealand team competing at the 2025 FISU World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.
With extensive experience in high-performance sport leadership, campaign management, and multi-sport event operations, Williamson is well-equipped to lead the New Zealand delegation at one of the world’s largest sporting events. Having served as Head of Delegation for New Zealand teams at the 2017 and 2019 World University Games, alongside her role with the New Zealand Olympic Committee in campaign and games delivery, she brings invaluable expertise to the role.
UTSNZ Executive Director Sarah Anderson emphasised the critical role of experience within multi-sport campaign environments, particularly given the unique logistical complexities of Rhine-Ruhr 2025. “This year’s event presents distinct challenges with its multi-city format and the intricacies of FISU event operations. Evelyn’s extensive background in Games logistics, as well as planning and delivery, made her the ideal candidate to lead our team.”
Williamson has been instrumental in the delivery of 14 international Games campaigns, including multiple Olympic and Commonwealth Games.
“I am honoured to take on the role of Chef de Mission for the New Zealand team,” said Williamson. “The World University Games provide an incredible opportunity for our student-athletes to compete on a global stage. My focus will be on ensuring they have the support, structure, and high-performance environment needed to succeed while navigating the challenges of a complex Games setup.”
Williamson also expressed her passion for working with student-athletes at this pivotal stage in their sporting journeys. “For some, this will be the pinnacle of their careers, and for others, a crucial stepping stone toward the Commonwealth Games and Olympics. No matter their pathway, the World University Games offer an incredible environment for growth, learning, and development. I am excited to help guide our athletes through this experience and support them in reaching their full potential.”
The 2025 FISU World University Games will take place from July 16–27 in the Rhine-Ruhr region of Germany, bringing together thousands of elite student-athletes from around the world. The New Zealand delegation is expected to compete in multiple sports, including Archery, Artistic Gymnastics, Athletics, 3x3 Basketball, Diving, Fencing, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Rowing, Swimming, Taekwondo, Beach Volleyball and Water Polo.
UTSNZ looks forward to working with Williamson in delivering a world-class campaign and supporting New Zealand’s student-athletes in their pursuit of excellence on the international stage.
