Jason Nel - Accelerating a Career Through Growth in Personal Leadership

Aspiring to accelerate his career through growth in personal leadership capabilities, as well as adding value to teams and colleagues within sport and management environments, UTSNZ is excited to announce Jason Nel as this year’s New Zealand student representative in the FISU Volunteer Leaders Academy (FVLA).

The aim of the FVLA is to create a volunteering community around the world that can share the best global practices in volunteer projects in all kinds of sports events.

Emerging sport management leaders receive an intense programme that includes lectures, roundtable discussions and networking opportunities. The benefits for Academy participants also going beyond the practical, educational and cultural, with the top attendees earning additional elite internship and scholarship opportunities.

An accomplished rower and former Deputy Head Boy at St Peters School, Jason’s passion for sport and leadership is already proving a successful combination.

In his last year at high school in 2019, Jason was awarded both the Linda Bragg Memorial Trophy, awarded to the student who epitomised the school philosophy to the greatest extent, as well as the Victor Ludorum Trophy which recognises St Peters School’s top sportsman.

Included in the 2021 Wellington School of Business and Government Dean’s List for academic excellence, Jason is now in his final year of a Bachelor of Commerce at Victoria University, majoring in Management and Marketing.

UTSNZ hopes that supporting Jason to take part in the FVLA will help him forge expanded networks, and also support the concept of global citizenship which has increasingly been at the forefront of tertiary institution objectives.

With over 100 countries represented, the Academy provides students with an awareness and understanding of the wider world and our place within it, both as a New Zealander and a leader in sport.

Already part of the Wellington International Leadership Programme (a co-curricular, interdisciplinary programme aimed at advancing a student’s ability to critically engage with global issues and become more globally aware), the blending of Jason’s two passions leadership and sport makes him the ideal candidate.

Jason has also recently been elected on to the UTSNZ Board of Directors as a student representative in recognition of his leadership skills and potential and is putting his practical skills to use as the current UTSNZ Marketing intern.

An impressive young man who is setting high standards for himself, we are excited to support Jason’s development as a leader of the future.
