The Lincoln University 3X3 women’s basketball side will be taking on the globe's best tertiary teams in the World Cup in Turkey at the end of the month. The team earned the trip to the FISU University World Cup which runs from 27-29 October, after taking out the National Tertiary 3x3 Championship title earlier this year. The 2022 National Tertiary Championship Series drew to a close at the weekend after one of the most competitive series since its inauguration in 2016. It was the University of Auckland - Waipapa Taumata Rau that clinched the overall championship series title after claiming gold at the National Tertiary Netball Championships in Wellington, with Massey University taking the title of overall Spirit Champions. Originally scheduled for March, University rowing crews took to the waters of the Whanganui river at the weekend for the Aon NZ University Rowing Championships. The University of Canterbury took out the prestigious championship 8+s race, but it was the University of Otago who took maximum Championship points retaining the overall Ashes Trophy.

After a two year hiatus, the National Tertiary Basketball Championship was back on the calendar with the top university teams in the country once again battling it out for national supremacy. University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand today announced that Anne-Marie Parsons, Associate Director Campus Life (Student Engagement & Wellbeing) at the University of Auckland, will take over as Chair from the 12th of September replacing Nicola Clayden, who will step down from the role after completing seven years as Director and Chair. Following four action-packed days of Universities from across Aotearoa battling it out on the futsal court in Christchurch’s MainPower Stadium, the 2022 Tertiary Futsal Championships came to a close on Sunday 4th September with the University of Canterbury claiming the title of champions in both the Men’s and Women’s competition.

After a two year absence, over 200 excited student-athletes took to the fields at the University of Waikato for the 2022 NZ Tertiary Ultimate Championships. An exciting final saw the University of Auckland Flood team claim the title and the gold medal, winning 15-12 over the University of Otago Toroa.  The University of Canterbury Honey Badgers claimed the bronze medal and University of Canterbury Pythons were recognised for their outstanding sportsmanship with the Spirit of the Game Award.

Sport has always been a big part of campus life at Lincoln University and the university has a history of its leaders undertaking sporting roles. Current Vice Chancellor, Professor Grant Edwards, continues this tradition and makes history as the first to claim the double of leading a University and a provincial sporting side at the same time.

Planning is well underway for the New Zealand Universities Lacrosse Tournament which is being held at the University of Auckland on Saturday 16 July. Six teams from five universities will be competing for the title this year including AUT, the University of Waikato, Victoria University of Wellington, the University of Canterbury, and two teams from hosts the University of Auckland.

The International University Sports Federation (FISU) held their meeting of the Executive Committee on the 24 and 25th of June, in Brasilia. At this meeting the dates of the Chengdu World University Games were confirmed as 28 July to 8 August, 2023. Read more here.

UTSNZ and Orienteering NZ are pleased to announce the selection of nine athletes to compete at the 2022 FISU World University Orienteering Championships to be held in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland from the 17th to 21st August. Read more here.

Sport NZ has released two new Active NZ 2021 reports: Changes in Participation and Updating the Participation Landscape. Active NZ has been running in its current form since 2017 and now offers five years’ worth of data. With this comes an opportunity to investigate emerging trends, as well as providing a robust sample to dig into specific demographic audiences including 18-24-year-olds. Click here for more.

The top tertiary 3x3 talent from across the motu converged on Massey University in Palmerston North last weekend for the National Tertiary 3x3 Championship.
